Fond du Lac Grand Prix – Tour of America’s Dairyland – Day 9

The Fond du Lac Grand prix yesterday was another great race that I managed to mess up at the end. Let’s start with the positive, though. I was in several breaks and even attacked once to start a break. I rode well at the front for the entire race before blowing the last lap. There was a really cool health fair for the kids where they got free entry into the Children’s Museum after first having fun outside with the police, firefighters, pirate ship bouncy obstacle course, and more.

Now back to the racing – this is definitely amazing training and experience, but it is unfortunate how expensive this trip is turning out to be with a $52 entry free for yesterday’s race and coming away with nothing. Maybe I can make up for it today with the Downer’s Grove race in Milwaukee having $10,000 worth of primes up for grabs. Surely I can find my way to the front for one or two of them! I was first in the field (five man break up the road) across the finish line at the start of the last lap. Two riders attacked coming out of turn #1, and I tried to chase and close the gap to them, but I didn’t make it so I was still leading the field now in 8th position on the road (5-man break, 2 guys dangling just ahead) heading into turn #3 when the surge for the finishing sprint started. I was expecting it, so I ramped up my own speed but still got passed by about 5 or 6 people heading into turn #3. Then I got passed by a few more people going through the final turn. Then in the final sprint I was passed by 7 or 8 more people including one right on the finish line even though my speed at the finish was 35mph. Everyone else must have been sprinting at 37-40mph. To summarize, I lost 20 positions on the last lap including 18 positions between turn #3 and the finish — finishing out of the money and out of the points. Here is all my data from Strava (my iBike broke during the race as the front cover fell off – I’m guessing that repeated days of pro racing at 30+ mph on Wisconsin bumpy, cracked roads places a lot of stress on the iBike)

Sheboygan Criterium – Tour of America’s Dairyland – Day 8

Disappointing race yesterday in Sheboygan. A steady persistent rain made for slick streets so I opted for the inside line on all four corners. This was a good decision because there were more than twenty wrecks. Many of them were single rider wrecks of someone taking a corner a bit too fast and sliding out. Sometimes the wrecks took down more than one person though. There was a wreck on the first turn of the first lap of the race. Then there was a wreck on the last turn of the first lap of the race. In fact, for the first ten laps, there was a wreck on that last turn about every lap. The only corner that didn’t have any wrecks was turn three. Eventually, though, after the first ten laps enough people had dropped out of the race and our pace had settled down enough that we went relatively wreck free for the middle 30 laps or so. Then in the last few laps, the wrecks ratcheted up again with wrecks on Turn #1 and Turn #4. The last lap had a wreck on Turn #1 which I squeezed around losing enough momentum not to be able to pass anyone from there to the finish. I was pretty much the last rider relatively cleanly around the wreck, though, so nobody passed me either. So I finished at the back of the front group for 26th with Dan Holloway (Kelly Benefits) taking the win.

I had great tires that never slipped once, even when going for a $100 prime. That was the most disappointing part of the race for me. I attacked going into the third corner for the prime. I got away from the field and went as fast as I could around the third and fourth corners. I had a pretty good gap, but I knew that I needed to sprint like it was the end of the race in order to stay away for the prime. Out of turn #4 was a painfully long 500-600 meter sprint. I went as hard as I could and got passed by 1 guy about 10 meters before the line. I was so frustrated and crushed because we really needed the $100 given that we found out earlier in the day that our car needed a $600 repair (the electronics in the car are shot, no instruments, $450 part + $150 labor) to make it safely home to Alabama. Still, I fought hard and yet somehow managed to slide back far enough to be out of the money at the end, too. So in other words, I raced a long, hard dangerous race (because of the wet conditions) and got absolutely nothing for it. No money, no points. I got passed by the eventual winner (US pro crit champion Dan Holloway) with two laps to go. How am I in the same position as the winner with 2 laps to go, and yet he wins the race while I somehow slide back to 26th?? I guess it is all about risk taking. It was a flat race, too, and I warmed up on rollers so I only managed 1000 ft of climbing for the Strava Studio Velo competition.

The only bright spot on the day is that my family joined me for the race and is here with me for the last three races. The kids didn’t care that it was 60 degrees and raining and a had a great time playing in the rain on a playground while Kristine and I huddled under a small shelter. Then they rode their scooters in the rain and cheered with Kristine during the entire race. I guess it was good that I was “off the front” going for the prime to help make the race exciting for them – even though I didn’t get the prime, which really sucked (did I mention that already???) After the race, the kids wanted to ride a lap of the course with me, but the streets were already open so we settled for a ride down through the start/finish area and back.

Kudos to the race organizers, officials, and SRAM mechanics for keeping the race running on time and well organized despite the wet weather.

I opted to ride without my iBike given the increased probablity of an iBike breaking wreck. Also, thanks to one of my sponsors back home (Dan Taylor – Infinity Medispa) for the suggestion to ride with my garmin in a ziplock bag in my back pocket. Worked perfectly and I didn’t have to fool with finding a rubber band to cover up the Garmin with a ziplock bag while mounted on the bike to keep it from malfunctioning in the rain.

Ripon TT (aka “rest day”) – Tour of America’s Dairyland – Day 7

Instead of the time trial, I opted for a four hour easy paced ride in search of hills along the Ice Age trail. It was a beautiful ride … check out the panoramic view I stitched together from photos I took at the top of the lookout tower on Lapham Peak, and check out the pictures in the gallery below.

One more note about yesterday’s Schlitz Park criterium … I forgot to mention the dramatic temperature drop during the middle of the race. You could see clouds and fog moving in, and the temperature dropped 10 degrees over a span of 30 minutes with the temperature bottoming out at 55 degF here on the first day of summer in Wisconsin! Schlitz Park Criterium – Tour of America’s Dairyland – Day 6

This has to be one of my all-time favorite criterium courses, although I would not want to race it in the rain. Fortunately for us in the pro men’s field, we dodged the thunderstorms and raced on a completely dry course. This was not the case for races earlier in the day, including the pro women’s field (see pics in the gallery below). The race starts on Pleasant St at river level (Milwaukee River). The first turn takes you onto Brewer Hill where you climb all 68 ft that course gains in one shot. Then after a flat section across the top, you dive down through a series of twists and turns to make it back down to Pleasant St for the finishing sprint. In the middle of the race, I was thinking how beautiful it was to be following a single file line of riders through so many turns at speeds approaching 35mph on the downhill series of turns lap after lap. This was the most technical course of the entire series, and there were no wrecks!

Here is how the race played out – a small break established itself within the first few laps of the race. They stayed away for the entire race, but never lapped the field. Towards the middle of the race, I tried to get into a chase group. This lasted for a lap. Then with 5 laps to go, another move went off the front of the field. I saw it but hesitated. Then I decided to jump anyway and rode the rest of that lap and part of the next one solo trying to chase back onto the chase group. It was all for naught though, because the field caught me and eventually reeled back in the chase group with 3 laps to go. I had burned a lot of matches with that move, but I still really wanted a top 20 result so I fought hard to move up on the last two laps and ended up 19th.

iBike stats – a couple interesting things highlighted in red. The interesting thing about the braking is how little there was of it. You really didn’t have to brake that much anywhere on the course because everybody was so smooth!

Greenbush Road Race – Tour of America’s Dairyland – Day 5

Notice anything missing in this picture??? Answer – my iBike came loose on one section of bumpy road. There was no way to tighten it back up while riding so I had to wait for one of the screws to come completely off. Then I could spin the iBike around to unscrew the other screw. Finished the race with the iBike and my iPhone in my pocket.

This was a fun race course through the Kettle Moraine State Forest area near Greenbush and Elkhart Lake. The course was rolling with several steep rollers having gradients well over 10%. I got into an early move that lasted 3/4 of a lap. The field brought us back, and I drifted too far back in the pack so I missed the counter attack and a subsequent chase group that hung in front of us for a while. Then as people in our group started to pull out of the race, the chase group left the field for good which meant that the rest of us were racing for something like 12th or 13th. Still, I wanted to make a race of it so I tried to get in a few moves, and I tried to keep the pace in the field rolling.

On the last lap, Steve Tilford attacked after exiting the forest. A couple guys bridged up to him, and I was sorta in disbelief that I had just missed another move. An ISCorp rider attacked into the headwind a little while later. I was at the front and determined not to just wait for a field sprint. So I attacked to bridge up to the ISCorp rider. I attacked hard and was able to get away cleanly. I looked behind and saw that the field hadn’t responded so I poured everything into it not saving anything for the sprint. I made it to the ISCorp rider right as we were making the lefthand turn to take us through a long section of crosswinds. We worked hard together and could see the field strung out behind, but they had waited too long to start chasing. Up ahead we were closing on the break of three who appeared to have merged with the remnants of the chase group that had been gone since the second lap. I need to see the results to see my exact placing to determine if that is what happened. In any case, we couldn’t quite close the gap to that group, but we stayed ahead of the field. I couldn’t compete with the ISCorp rider in the sprint after doing a lot of work so I sat up and eased in just ahead of the field.
